The craftsman’s delight can be felt in the wo od itself – the pride and joy of paulownia!
Since its establishment in 1973, Ishimoku has been known for its work in paulownia w ood, or “kiri”, overseeing a careful production
system from the first stages of sourcing raw wood materials to the final stages of finishing. In order to make the most of the charms
of the wood, to our traditional Japanese chests we have added contemporary furniture pieces, lifestyle accessories and housing
materials to create a whole world of items showcasing the beauty of paulownia.
Paulownia – the great all-rounder
As a raw material paulownia has be en revered in Japan since ancient times for its resilience to damage by insects and water, for its
fire proof properties, rot resistance and very high ignition point and, owing to its pliable texture, it has long been used as a materialfor making chests of drawers and other items of traditional furniture. It is also an ideal wood for other lifestyle accessories thanks to
its excellent thermal insulating properties and lightweight nature.
Easy Chair
A chair mad e from one laminated paulownian timber layered laterally, with minimum loss for ecology. The lateral alignment of thetimber means that, even though there are just 2 designs to choose from, the chair has a myriad of different characters depending on which angle it is viewed from. The distinctive side view draws a curved line from the base of the legs to the backrest, and the formmeans that the chair seems almost to hug the person seated. Taking full advantage of the lightweight properties of paulownia, and
of the simplicity of the design with no unnecessary bits and pieces, the chair is extremely easy to carry. The surface of the chair hasbeen finished with a burner to enhance its strength and the resulting colour and textures make this the perfect design piece in which to enjoy those moments of relaxation every man deserves.
